Discussing Various Technologies

It is my belief that most of the technologies that mankind has invented are abused despite the legitimate purposes they serve.   It is a constant effort for us to check our abuses and use our technologies for their greatest potential.  Beneath these words is a list of technologies.  Accompanying each are my opinions on the technology’s utilitarian uses as well as the repercussions of its misuse.

I am not here to discuss abolishing any technologies, (though I do think we could do without the paper towel).

Before we move onto specific technologies I think it is important to discuss the ones we are using right now: the computer and the Internet.  Like all of the technologies that are to come below, when used properly, the computer has an honorable purpose.

I found two quotes on the fruitful Internet that illustrates the honorable and abusive uses of computers and the Internet:

“I think it's fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we've ever created. They're tools of communication, they're tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user.”  -Bill Gates

The next quote, while broad, can be applied to our discussion on computers and the Internet: “Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. They are but improved means to an unimproved end.”  -  Henry David Thoreau

We all abuse the computer and the Internet, and we all use them honorably.  Like all of the technologies to come, it is a constant battle to reduce our abuses to use the computer and Internet wisely.
